The Nebraska football team practiced for an hour and 30 minutes in shorts and helmets at Memorial Stadium Thursday afternoon, putting the final touches on preparations for its season-opening game against Arizona State in the Black Coaches Association Classic this Saturday, Aug. 24. The game, which will be seen on ESPN, kicks off at 6:47 p.m.

?We had another good workout, one that is typical of a Thursday,? Head Coach Frank Solich said. ?It was hot and we didn?t want to keep them out in the humidity too long. We are in good shape and the team?s attitude is excellent. It should be a good ballgame.?

The game will be Nebraska?s sixth preseason contest, with NU holding a perfect 5-0 mark in those games. The Huskers also participated in the Pigskin Kickoff Classic last season, defeating TCU, 21-7, at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 25. Solich is 2-0 in preseason games, also winning against Louisiana Tech, 56-27, in 1998.

While the 105-man squad will have its walk-through Friday evening, the rest of the team will report for the first time this season. Several players will get ready to suit up right away, Solich said. ?Not all of them are going to suit up, but there will be a bunch of guys who have been in the program for a while who were not part of the 105 who will suit up,? Solich said.

Solich also announced that there were no new players ruled out for Saturday?s contest, although I-back Marques Simmons is questionable. Nebraska will have a walk-through at Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with Coach Solich available to briefly speak with the media prior to the start. Arizona State will have its walk-through at 2 p.m.

Also Thursday, senior Will linebacker Scott Shanle and sophomore Mike linebacker Barrett Ruud were named on the initial 2002 Butkus Award Watch List. The award is presented by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc., is given annually to the nation?s best collegiate linebacker. The Watch List consisted of 67 players, including 11 from the Big 12 Conference. Trev Alberts, who won the award in 1993, is the only former Husker to earn the honor. The Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on Oct. 17, before three finalists are named on Nov. 14. The winner will be announced Dec. 13.
