Lincoln, Neb. - University of Nebraska and FOX Sports Net officials announced Thursday, Aug. 29, that this Saturday?s game against Troy State (Aug. 31) and next week?s game against Utah State (Sept. 7) will be jointly webcast on HuskersNside.com, FOXsports.com on Lycos and RealNetworks? for members of their individual subscription offerings. The two Nebraska home games, which will not be televised, will be the first Internet only video broadcasts on the Huskers.com website, a joint venture between the University of Nebraska Athletic Department and New Media Networks, LLC. The broadcasts will include HuskerVision segments and live commentary from play-by-play announcer Kevin Kugler and color commentary by Larry Punteney.
"HuskersNside.com was just launched three weeks ago and has already been a big success," University of Nebraska Director of Athletics Bill Byrne said. "Our product, which includes exclusive video on-demand and streaming is ground breaking in college athletics, and it allows our fans to get behind-the-scenes access to Husker sports that they can?t get anywhere else."
"We believe this unique cooperative effort between FOX Sports, the University of Nebraska and the Big 12 Conference will be the prototype for future cooperation among networks, schools and conferences," Byrne said. "Our fans will be able to choose the subscription content they wish to receive, and with each choice, they will receive live Nebraska football."
Byrne worked directly with representatives from the Big 12 Conference and FOX Sports Net in order to work out the details of the broadcasts. The game time for both games remains at its original 6 p.m. CDT start. Live webcast coverage of the game on Huskers.com will begin at 5 p.m. CDT.
"I would like to thank FOX Sports Net for their cooperation in helping us to bring these Internet broadcasts to our fans," Byrne said. "Since these games were not going to be televised, we were able to work with FOX Sports Net and the conference to air these two webcasts so that more people would have the opportunity to see our games.
"With the current parameters in place, we believe there could be additional opportunities to stream future football games this season, but we won?t know until all the TV picks have been exhausted (six/12 days before a game)," Byrne said.
Fans who have already signed up for any of the three HuskersNside subscription packages available at www.Huskers.com will receive both the Troy State and Utah State games as part of their regular package at no extra cost. This exclusive programming is also available to consumers through FOXSports.com or as part of the FOXSports.com content within RealNetworks? RealOne SuperPass for a monthly fee of $9.95. Subscribers to RealOne SuperPass will get access to live broadband streaming video of Big 12 games, plus a weekly highlight package, features, and exclusive news and coverage on their favorite teams.
All of the subscription offerings will provide 250 kbps video feeds giving an optimal experience to broadband (Cable Internet, DSL or Satellite Internet) subscribers.
In addition to Saturday?s broadcast, HuskersNside subscription members will receive every live home football postgame press conference, live and on-demand Husker sporting events, including volleyball, soccer, basketball, track and field, wrestling, gymnastics, baseball and softball, daily football practice reports, coaches shows, archived highlights and player features, as well as discounts at Huskers Authentic.
Fans who have not purchased HuskersNside memberships are encouraged to purchase a subscription early to make sure they are technically able to receive the broadcasts and avoid the last-minute rush prior to Saturday?s kickoff. HuskersNside comes in one of three packages, a year-long subscription ($99.95), a football season package ($39.95) which runs from August to January, and a monthly rate of $9.95. Log onto www.Huskers.com for more information on these package options.
The broadcast production will be handled by HuskerVision and will include all of the features that are carried inside of Memorial Stadium on game day. The subscription charge underwrites the costs incurred in broadcasting the event, including satellite feeds, new equipment and additional staffing.
This will mark the second time that a Husker football game has been broadcast exclusively on the internet. In 2000, the NU Athletic Department also partnered with FOXSports.com to produce the Huskers? game against San Jose State, one of the first college football games in that medium. Since then, significant advances have been made in video streaming, including the introduction of broadband connections that have enhanced the viewing of live events over the internet.
The Huskers.com site has been renovated and all the material that was on the old site is still free, but the HuskersNside.com site enhances the coverage of sports and the entire athletic program.
