The No. 8/7 Nebraska football team continued preparations for Penn State on Wednesday, as the Huskers went through a two-hour workout on the grass practice fields north of Memorial Stadium. NU focused on conditioning during practice with a quicker tempo and more repetition.
"I thought we practiced well," Head Coach Frank Solich said. "We were in full pads and did an awful lot to try and condition as we went through the practice. As you know, the weather is not very hot right now, so they are getting a break on that end of it. We tried to make sure that there was a lot of movement in practice so that their conditioning was not only done after practice, but during practice with the number and tempo of the reps that they got."
The Huskers are set to travel to Penn State for the first time since 1982 when the Nittany Lions pulled out a last-second 27-24 win. The last time the two teams met was a year later in the Kickoff Classic at East Rutherford, N.J., where Nebraska won 44-6. Penn State owns a 6-5 edge in the all-time series.
"The players understand the caliber of players that they are going to be playing against," Solich said referring to Penn State. "They understand the program in terms of national recognition and its great tradition. They know what kind of game we are in for. You have to go prepare yourself mentally and physically for this type of game."
Mike linebackers Barrett Ruud and Chad Sievers both practiced on Wednesday. NU will return to the practice field on Thursday in shorts and helmets. The Huskers are also scheduled for a light walk-through on Friday morning at Memorial Stadium.
