Lincoln - The Nebraska football team practiced for two hours Tuesday afternoon on the Memorial Stadium turf, as the Huskers continued preparations for Saturday?s tilt at No. 11Kansas State. Kickoff between the Huskers and Wildcats is set for 11:42 a.m., for the Fox Sports Telecast.
Nebraska Head Coach Frank Solich said the players looked a little tired during the workout, but said the players fought through the sluggishness and said the overall practice was good.
The Husker head coach also talked about the Will linebacker spot, where juniors T.J. Hollowell and Demorrio Williams flip-flopped positions in this week?s depth chart, with Hollowell, a junior from Copperas Cove, Texas, taking the No. 1 spot. Solich said that Hollowell "has played well" in recent weeks, but also noted that both players will see extensive action against Kansas State.
The duo has been very effective for the Huskers, combining for 113 tackles through 11 games. Williams leads the Blackshirts with 65 stops, while Hollowell has 48 tackles this season and ranks among the team leaders with seven quarterback hurries.
The Huskers will need a strong defensive effort to shut down Kansas State?s ground attack, as the Wildcats rank fifth nationally in rushing, averaging 253.1 yards per game. Running back Darren Sproles is the catalyst for the Wildcats offense, averaging over 107 yards per game, including seven 100-yard efforts this season. KSU leads the Big 12 and ranks second nationally, scoring an average of 46.1 points per game.
"As you look at them they are a great offensive football team," Solich said earlier Tuesday during his weekly press conference. "They are second in the country in scoring offense right now with an I-back that has great acceleration and a great ability to make you miss, along with a quarterback that has the same kind of speed and ability to make you miss. He is a big-play quarterback right now in the running game as well as the passing game, and they?re very physical up front. It?s a good kind of combination for an offensive football team."
The Huskers will return to practice Wednesday afternoon for their final full-pads practice of the week.
