The Red White World Series Highlights from Game 5, 6, 7

Lincoln - Tim Schoeninger scattered two hits in four shutout innings, as the Red team won the decisive game of the Red/White Series, 2-0, Friday evening at Hawks Field. The Red team won two of three games Friday, as the teams played three four-inning games to conclude fall practice, to earn a 4-3 series win.

The freshman right-hander from Denver, Colo., capped an impressive week with his first series win to go with a save he earned on Wednesday. Schoeninger allowed one earned run on eight hits in eight innings of work, covering four appearances, for a 1.12 ERA. The Reds supplied all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Drew Anderson, who had two hits, and Alex Gordon off Jeremy Becker, who took the loss. Anderson finished the series with a .400 average, while Gordon, a freshman from Lincoln Southeast, paced the Red team with his .421 average and seven RBIs.

The teams had split the two earlier games Friday, with the Red squad posting a 3-1 win behind a solid performance from left-hander Aaron Marsden, while the Whites used some late-inning heroics to force a seventh game with a 3-2 win.

In the opener, the Reds scored all three runs in the first off Jamie Rodrigue, as Anderson, Gordon and sophomore catcher Matt Wells all produced run scoring hits. Marsden took advantage of the early runs support, allowing five hits as only Daniel Bruce?s solo homer in the third prevented the shutout. A first-team All-Big 12 selection last spring, Marsden picked up the win and finished the series with a 1.64 ERA, allowing two runs in 11 innings of work.

In game two, the White squad relied on a strong outing from sophomore Brian Duensing, who allowed two runs - one earned - on four hits in his four innings of work, while Darren Hoffart, who finished the series with a .389 average with three doubles and five RBIs, delivered an RBI double to right center, scoring Joe Simokaitis from second, to break the 2-2 tie in the fourth. Bruce paced the White squad with a pair of hits, including a RBI single, while Jeff Leise picked up a pair of hits for the Red team, including a solo homer, his second round tripper of the fall.

The Huskers return to practice in January, as they begin preparations for the 2003 season opener on Feb. 14.
