2002 Outlook After a strong fall campaign, junior Marcellus Dawson has put himself into the mix for a spot in the Husker lineup this spring. A shortstop and center fielder in junior college, Dawson has showed the ability to play several positions in the infield. The 6-3, 190-pounder capped the fall by hitting .455 with five runs scored in the Red-White Series.
Muscatine Community College Dawson spent two seasons playing for Coach Rob Allison at Muscatine Community College in Iowa. He was an honorable-mention all-district selection in 2001 after batting .325 with three homers, 14 doubles, 18 RBIs and 36 runs scored, while also stealing seven bases, as the Indians went 20-19. In his first season at the school, he hit .385 with three homers, while going 10-for-12 on the basepaths. A 26th-round selection of the Boston Red Sox, Dawson originally signed with Iowa State in the fall of 2000 before the Cyclones disbanded their program and chose NU over UW-Milwaukee and Middle Tennessee State.
Wauwatosa East High School Dawson was one of the most heralded players in the state of Wisconsin during his prep career for Coach Jerry Toubl at Wauwatosa East High School in Milwaukee. He was chosen Gatorade State Player of the Year in baseball and was tabbed the state?s top player by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association following a senior campaign in which he batted .488 and scored 67 runs in 35 contests. Dawson, who finished the 1999 season with 13 homers and 47 RBIs, stole 35 bases and was a 38th-round selection by the San Diego Padres. A three-sport athlete in high school, Dawson also was a first-team all-conference selection as a wide receiver and played basketball as a senior.
