2002 Outlook One of several left-handers in this year?s freshman class, Tag Horner will add depth to the Husker pitching staff. According to pitching coach Rob Childress, Horner could contribute either as a starter or in the bullpen.
?Tag is a little raw. He is very athletic and has explosive stuff,? Childress said. ?He wants to get better and is not afraid to put the work in, either on the mound or in the weight room.?
Duncan High School An all-state selection, Horner was a tremendous two-way player for Coach Shane Coker at Duncan High School. As a senior, he was limited to 11 innings because of an injury, but was 1-1 with nine strikeouts and a 0.75 ERA. Offensively, he batted .387 with seven homers, 12 doubles, 39 RBIs and 28 runs scored to garner all-area and all-regional honors for the third straight year. Last summer, he went 3-1 with three saves and a 1.85 ERA, striking out 59 batters in 30 innings. Horner also batted .485 with 10 doubles, five triples and 27 RBIs. For his performances, he was MVP of the Lawton Constitutional Regional All-Star Classic and earned all-tournament honors at the Edmond Wooden Bat Tournament. As a junior, Horner struck out 158 batters in 103 innings of work, while also hitting .427 with eight homers and 34 RBIs. He threw a pair of no-hitters while also striking out 15 batters in a six-inning game. In Legion ball, he enjoyed an outstanding season, going 6-3 with 71 Ks and a 0.92 ERA on the hill, while also putting up impressive numbers at the plate (.426-5-52) en route to a selection to the Sunset Series all-star team. An honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society, Horner, who also played three seasons of football at DHS, selected Nebraska over Oklahoma State, Oklahoma City University and Seminole Junior College.
