San Diego, Calif. -- A
school-record four Huskers are among the 24 players who earned 2001 All-America
honors, the America Volleyball Coaches Association announced Wednesday. Senior
right side hitter Nancy Metcalf and junior middle blocker Amber Holmquist were
named to the first team, while senior middle blocker Jenny Kropp and junior setter
Greichaly Cepero were recognized with second-team honors.
Metcalf, Stanford junior
Logan Tom and Long Beach State senior Cheryl Weaver are three-time selections.
Metcalf is just the sixth player in school history accomplish the feat. Holmquist
and Cepero were also among the 10 repeat selections to the team.
Nebraska, in San Diego preparing
for its NCAA semifinal match against Stanford Thursday at 10 p.m. CST, has produced
22 AVCA All-Americans who have combined to produced 42 awards.
The All-America team is
selected by the AVCA Division I All-American committee. By earning an All-America
honor, a player becomes eligible for AVCA Player-of-the-Year consideration.
The award will be presented at the AVCA All-American/Player-of-the-Year banquet
Friday morning at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina.
Metcalf, a native of Hull,
Iowa, becomes just the sixth three-time All-American in NU history. The 1999
and 2001 Big 12 Player of the Year, Metcalf leads Nebraska in kills per game
(4.28), digs per game (3.09), service aces (44) and double-doubles (15). Metcalf,
who has already notched 10 service aces in the NCAA Tournament, recently joined
former U.S National Team Allison Weston as the only two players in school history
to rank among the Nebraska career top ten in kills and total blocks. Metcalf
ranks third on the NU career charts in kills (1,589), third in attacks (3,701),
ninth in block assists (373) and 10th in total blocks (409).
Holmquist, a native of Houston,
Texas, is making her second appearance on the AVCA All-America squad, as she
was named to the second team last year. Holmquist was the Big 12 blocking champion
(156 total blocks, 1.81 per game) and the Big 12 hitting percentage champion
(.404). Holmquist is tied for third nationally in blocks per game and ninth
in hitting percentage. Holmquist is on track to challenge NU career blocking
records in every category, as she already ranks third in school history in block
assists (472) and sixth in total blocks (527).
Cepero, a native of Dorado,
Puerto Rico, is making her second appearance on the AVCA All-America team. The
2000 AVCA Player of the Year, Cepero has led the Huskers to a .306 hitting percentage,
which ranks sixth nationally, and five Huskers are hitting .285 or better under
her direction. Cepero has posted impressive all-around numbers this season,
averaging 12.38 assists, 2.27 digs, 1.30 blocks and 1.31 kills per game on a
.271 hitting percentage. Cepero?s 1.40 blocks per game ranked fifth in
the Big 12 statistical rankings, and she was the only setter ranked among the
league?s top 10 in blocking.
Kropp, a native of Grand
Island, Neb., is making her first appearance on the AVCA All-America team. Kropp,
who ranks second on the team in hitting percentage (.378) and blocks per game
(1.74), has played her best this season in NU?s biggest matches. She has
led the Huskers with a .389 hitting percentage and 1.79 blocks per game in 18
matches against ranked teams. Kropp ranks second in school history in blocks
assists (481), fourthin total blocks (540), ninth in solo blocks (59) and seventh
in hitting percentage (.332).
