Laura Pilakowski pounded a match-high 17 kills on a .333 hitting percentage Saturday to lead the Red team to a 30-20, 30-26, 30-14 victory over the White team in the Nebraska?s annual preseason volleyball scrimmage before 1,417 fans at the NU Coliseum. Pilakowski, who tallied 12 of her kills in game one, also posted seven digs for the Red team, which included the Husker probable starters Greichaly Cepero, Amber Holmquist, Lindsay Wischmeier, Melissa Elmer, Anna Schrad and Jennifer Saleaumua.
"Laura Pilakowski was very impressive today," Nebraska Coach John Cook said. "She is so fast at the net that it will wear on opposing blockers. I think she?s on a mission to make this a memorable season."
Sophomore outside hitters Rachel Baumstark and Ally Rebholz led the White team with eight kills each. Baumstark, who has not played the previous two seasons because of two ACL injuries, also produced eight digs, while Rebholz added 11.
Cook also praised Elmer, a redshirt freshman who posted eight kills while hitting at a .533 clip, and Baumstark.
"I was very encouraged with the way that Rachel played," Cook said. "She hasn?t done this in front of a crowd in two years, and she came out and competed like a veteran today. She was solid all the way around, and that had to feel good to her. Overall, the white team came out and really competed well. The challenge for those freshmen and sophomores will be do to it for two hours. But I think the fans got a treat today, the way both teams competed."
Husker liberos Lindsay Wischmeier (Red team) and Jenae Dowling (White team) recorded 18 and 14 digs, respectively, to lead their teams defensively.
