Seven Huskers Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

Seven Nebraska volleyball players were among the 50 student-athletes named to the 2002 Academic All-Big 12 volleyball teams, the league office announced Tuesday. The Huskers honored were all named to the first team and included seniors Greichaly Cepero, Amber Holmquist, Laura Pilakowski and Lindsay Wischmeier, and juniors Jenae Dowling, Anna Schrad and Sara Westling.

Cepero, Pilakowski, Holmquist and Wischmeier are all three-time first-team honorees. Dowling and Schrad are making their second appearances on the first team. Westling was a second-team pick in 2001 and is making her first appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 first team.

Nebraska and Kansas State each had a league-high seven players named to the first-team. Nominated by each institution?s director of student-athlete support services and the sports information offices, the volleyball academic all-league squad consisted of 44 first-team members combined with six on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 grade-point average.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team?s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
