Lincoln - The Nebraska football team held its first major scrimmage of the spring with a 107-play workout at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Nebraska Head Coach Frank Solich said he was generally pleased with the progress his team is making through the first two weeks of spring practice.

"From the standpoint of the first scrimmage we saw some good things, and that was encouraging. We hope to build on that. We have to take some giant steps in the next two weeks, and will have to work hard all of the summer as well."

The Nebraska offensive units put four touchdowns on the board during the scrimmage, including a pair of touchdown receptions by wide receiver Seth Rexilius.  The 5-11, 190-pound sophomore from Lincoln led all Husker receivers with three receptions for 72 yards on the afternoon.

DeAntae Grixby scored the Huskers' first touchdown on a two-yard run on the offense's first drive of the day.  Phillip Kniep added a six-yard score later in the scrimmage.  Overall, Nebraska rushed for 164 yards on 69 carries, including Dusty Stamer's scrimmage-long 21-yard gallop.  Nanfwang Mutfwang led all rushers with six carries for 37 yards, including a 20-yard sprint.

Jammal Lord finished the day with seven carries for 29 yards, despite wearing the green jersey.  David Horne added eight carries for 23 yards.

All four Husker quarterbacks used in the scrimmage showed some effectiveness throughout the day, completing 19-of-38 passes for 300 yards.  Lord completed 7-of-14 passes for 62 yards, while Mike Stuntz managed five completions in 13 attempts for 110 yards, including a scrimmage-long 43-yard strike to Dusty Keiser and a 35-yard completion to Alex Shada.  Garth Glissman was NU's most precise passer through the air, completing 5-of-7 passes for 95 yards and one touchdown.  Brett Lindstrom added two completions, including NU's first touchdown pass to Rexilius.

"Offensively we have some big-play potential players, and we saw some big plays today, which was good," Solich said. "Overall the pass protection was pretty good for the first scrimmage. I thought we took care of the ball pretty well and turned it up the field well."

The Nebraska defense also had several highlights throughout the scrimmage, stopping the offense on 18-of-22 possessions. Titus Adams and Adam Carriker each recorded 1.5 sacks on the day, while Seppo Evwaraye, Tyler Toline and Trevor Neeman also notched sacks during the scrimmage.

"I thought for our first scrimmage, things went pretty smooth," Solich said. "The defense is learning a whole new concept, and it will take awhile to gel. I thought it would be difficult for our defense to play well this early, and it worked out about like I expected. For the first scrimmage, I'm OK where we're at."

Solich announced after the scrimmage that linebacker Lannie Hopkins had surgery on Wednesday to repair a chronic groin problem.  Hopkins will miss the rest of spring practice, but is expected to have a full recovery.

"We would like to have him out here this spring, especially since he is moving from the secondary to linebacker," Solich said. "It will take some time for him to get back into playing form, but he is a good player, and he will work hard."

Nebraska will not practice on Sunday, but coaches and players will meet to watch film in the afternoon. Spring practice resumes on Monday at 3:15 p.m.
