Lincoln -- Nebraska?s Lisa Wangler has been named a finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player-of-the-Year Award, the Amateur Softball Association announced Wednesday afternoon. The senior outfielder was one of 25 finalists from 19 different universities and nine conferences.
Wangler leads the Huskers with a .360 average (41-for-114) with two triples, 10 doubles, 32 RBIs and a .667 slugging percentage in 2003. She also ranks second on the team with seven home runs. The Mesa, Ariz., native ranks among the Big 12 Conference leaders in several categories, including doubles (second), total bases (second), RBIs (third), slugging percentage (fourth), batting average (fifth), hits (sixth) and runs scored (ninth).
Wangler?s success in 2003 has come against some of the top pitchers in the nation. She has recorded six of her seven home runs against ranked teams, including one against No. 10 Cal State Fullerton and NFCA All-American pitcher Gina Oaks, one against No. 3 California, two against No. 23 Oregon State and two at No. 23 Texas A&M.
The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year finalist list will be reduced to 10 players on April 29, and the three finalists will be named on May 13th. The winner of the 2003 USA Softball Collegiate Player-of-the-Year Award will be announced at the 2003 NCAA Women?s College World Series in Oklahoma City. The winner will also be recognized during the ASA National Council Meeting in Orlando, Fla., in November.
The Amateur Softball Association, founded in 1933, is the national governing body of amateur softball in the United States and a member of the United States Olympic Committee. As the national governing body, the ASA is responsible for identifying, selecting and training male and female athletes to compete in World, Pan American and Olympic competitions.
